Pilates Street Lingo: "The Hundred" - Why Are We Counting to 100?
You know you've entered your Pilates era when pumping your arms flat by your sides while hovering your legs at a 45-degree angle suddenly feels like a personality trait.
If you are new to the studio, walking in and hearing your instructor casually announce, "Alright, let's pump for the Hundred," can sound a little intimidating. Are we doing a hundred reps? A hundred seconds? A hundred minutes of pure core torture? Let's decode the ultimate warm-up every studio girl knows by heart.
New to Pilates? Start with our Complete Pilates Guide - the moves, the language, and what to wear to class.
What you hear
"Alright everyone, curl your head, neck, and shoulders up and prepare for the Hundred." It sounds like a military countdown designed to max out your abs before the class even starts.
What it actually means
The Hundred is the classic, undisputed opening exercise of the traditional Pilates sequence. Invented by Joseph Pilates himself, it is a dynamic core exercise where you lift your head, neck, and shoulders off the mat, extend your legs long into tabletop or a 45-degree hover, and vigorously pump your arms up and down.
The catch? You breathe in for five counts, and breathe out for five counts. You repeat this breathing cycle ten times total. Five inhales plus five exhales equals ten counts per cycle. Repeat that ten times over, and boom - mathematical proof that you just completed 100 arm pumps.
What it actually feels like
In the first 20 counts, you think, "Oh, I've totally got this. This is an aesthetic studio moment." By count 50, your core feels like a furnace, your breath gets incredibly loud, and you start realizing exactly why your instructor keeps talking about spinal stability. It feels like a wave of heat spreading from your ribs all the way to your toes. It is the ultimate test of keeping your chest and pelvis completely still while your arms move with absolute power.
That heat you feel? That's exactly the burn - and it's your powerhouse doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
Why your instructor keeps saying it
The Hundred isn't just a random crunch variation designed to make you sore. It is a functional circulation pump. The vigorous arm movements and deep, rhythmic breathing are engineered to wake up your lungs, jumpstart your heart rate, and warm up your spine from the inside out. It sets the baseline for the rest of your class. If your core is locked in during the Hundred, your alignment will be perfect for everything that comes next on the reformer or the mat.
The Diva Goddess Take
Let's be honest: the absolute last thing you want to worry about on count 70 is your leggings sliding down your hips or a waistband digging into your stomach while you try to breathe. When you are deep in the Hundred, your fabric needs to lock into place so you can focus entirely on the pump.
We engineered the LuxeMove Leggings with high-waisted tummy support that hugs your core flat without cutting off your oxygen. The premium ActiveLux fabric offers 4-way stretch that moves effortlessly with your chest and pelvis, entirely eliminating rolling or sliding mid-exercise. You get a completely sleek, "snatched" profile and 100 clean counts of pure, uncompromised studio power.
